Thanks to Rich Noer, we have this latest bulletin on the parking question.

Arts Union Parking

Neighbors living in the vicinity of the old Middle School have been concerned about overuse of on-street parking after its conversion to the new Carleton Arts Union.  At a recent meeting with NESNA representatives, Carleton staff argued that the situation will be considerably improved due to recent design changes.

The reduced scale of the complex will employ fewer faculty and staff (21), and a plan for perpendicular parking along the east side of Union Street will create 28 new spaces.  With an estimate of 14 students (out of 280) driving to classes there, it appears that those 28 spaces plus parallel parking along Third Street just north of the complex will be more than enough to accommodate the normal daily demand.

Evening event parking is more difficult to predict, but also appears manageable.  A “worst case” scenario, assuming simultaneous use of the two largest venues (theater and cinema) and 20% of attendees coming by car, suggests a parking demand for 54 cars.  Of these, 28 can use the new spaces on Union St., and the remainder should be easily accommodated along nearby Carleton property along Third and College Streets.

Finally, during the approximately one year of construction activity, there should be sufficient parking for workers’ vehicles in the spaces mentioned above.  (The 28 Union St. spaces will be available early, after the completion of the street repaving early this summer.)

We wanted to let you know that the plan for trails at Old Memorial Field will be discussed at the Monday (May 10) Park and Recreation Advisory Board meeting.

The meeting is at 7:00 pm at City Hall (2nd floor Training Room).  We encourage all those interested in the development of the park to attend: it is very helpful to show community interest and involvement.
